Collagen is a protein which contributes to skin elasticity, hydration, and overall firmness, playing a crucial role in keeping the skin looking youthful. Collagen production naturally decreases with age (especially during menopause) and leads to signs of ageing such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Factors which can negatively impact collagen production include:
Preserving collagen levels is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful looking skin and overall skin health. The earlier in life you start looking after your skin the better. By taking a proactive approach and stimulating collagen production before it declines you can maintain better collagen levels and slow down the ageing process. Think of it like a savings plan for your skin! This is what we call 'collagen banking'.
HOW DO I GO ABOUT COLLAGEN BANKING?
There are lots of things you can do to maintain good collagen levels. The key is consistency which means getting in the habit of looking after your skin
every
day rather than trying to find a quick fix when things start to go wrong. You need to consider the following:
SUN PROTECTION
UV damage is the number one cause of ageing so the simplest and cheapest way to prevent ageing is to wear a good quality sunscreen EVERY day (yes even in winter and even when you are spending the day indoors). Make sure it is at least SPF30 and is designed for facial use. We don't recommend slathering your Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen on your face! You should also protect your face by wearing a hat and sunglasses when the UV count is high. It goes without saying that sunbeds are a big no no!
HEALTHY DIET
A healthy diet is essential to all your organs including your skin. Try to incorporate plenty of foods which are rich in Vitamin C (citrus fruits, berries, green vegetables, tomatoes), proline (fish, meat and dairy), glycine (meat, fish, dairy, seeds, beans, nuts) and zinc (red meat, poultry, whole grains, nuts). Vegetarians and vegans can boost their diet with supplements if required.
SMOKING
The toxins in cigarettes are known to degrade collagen and smoking also reduces the amount of oxygen available to the skin, which can leave it looking dull and lifeless. So it goes without saying that smoking should be avoided or minimised to preserve collagen.
ALCOHOL
Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it increases urine production and can lead to dehydration. Dehydration impairs the skin's ability to repair itself and maintain its collagen levels. Excessive alcohol consumption can also interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients, such as vitamin C and amino acids, which are necessary for collagen synthesis. Alcohol can also contribute to glycation, a process where sugar molecules attach to proteins like collagen, making them stiff and deformed. Reducing alcohol consumption can really make a difference to your skin health.
SKINCARE ROUTINE
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a 'collagen cream' as collagen molecules are simply too big to be absorbed into the skin. But what you can do is use skincare products which contain active ingredients which aid collagen production. Look for cosmeceutical products with Vitamin C, retinoids, peptides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Sunscreen is also a non-negotiable and is the best way to slow down ageing. PROFESSIONAL TREATMENTS
You can give your collagen levels a turbo boost by choosing treatments such as Radiofrequency, Microneedling, Skin Peels, Polynucleotide Injections, Profhilo and Microdermabrasion. By combining in-clinic treatments with good skincare and a healthy lifestyle you can maximise your collagen levels and slow down the decline.
Golden Radiofrequency works by delivering controlled, high-frequency energy into the deeper layers of the skin through gold plated transducers. The radiofrequency energy heats the dermal layer, stimulating new collagen and elastin production and repairing damaged collagen fibres.
This treatment combines two of the most effective collagen stimulating modalities – microneedling and radiofrequency (RF). At Halo Aesthetics we use the Sylfirm X device which is FDA approved and one of the most advanced RF Microneedling devices in the world.
Skin Peels are a great way to stimulate new collagen in the skin. Skin Peels vary greatly in strength from very superficial to deep, the deeper the peel the more the downtime but superficial peels can be carried out regularly and have very little downtime.
One of our most popular treatments, Profhilo stimulates four different types of collagen to improve overall skin quality. Profhilo is a great option for those who want to slow down the ageing process and keep collagen levels high.
Polynucleotides
This is the new kid on the block when it comes to aesthetic treatments but is quickly gaining popularity as a good option for skin renewal and restoration. This treatment uses biostimulating polynucleotides derived from salmon to regenerate the skin. Polynucleotides connect with receptors in the skin cells to trigger a cascade of restorative processes including the production of collagen.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion treatment uses a diamond tip to gently exfoliate dead skin cells stimulating skin renewal and collagen production. Microdermabrasion is best done regularly (we recommend every 4-6 weeks) to keep skin looking fresh.
SUPPLEMENTS
Collagen supplements come in the form of tablets, powders, gels and liquids and are usually sourced from marine or bovine collagen. They can be beneficial if used for prolonged periods but it does take a long time for it to reach the skin as the body will use it where it is most needed first, e.g. muscles, joints, organs etc. It is important to note that not all collagen supplements are created equal so you should do some research and choose a high quality one which can demonstrate its efficacy through clinical studies.
STRESS AND SLEEP
Lack of sleep and stress can significantly impact collagen levels and overall skin health. Sleep is crucial for the release of growth hormone, which plays a significant role in collagen production. Reduced sleep can decrease growth hormone levels and lead to a reduction in collagen production. The body needs sleep to repair and regenerate itself so lack of sleep can slow down this process, negatively affecting collagen production. Chronic stress leads to high cortisol levels, which can degrade collagen and slow down its production. You should aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep per night to support collagen production and manage your stress levels by engaging in activities such as exercise. meditation and mindfulness.
Our verdict: Absobloominglutely! Considering that it can easily be done through clever skincare, a healthy lifestyle and simple treatments there's really no reason not to. Your future self will thank you! 😊
